Part 2
Johann Strauß II
Overture to the Operetta "Waldmeister"
A group of woodsmen take a soprano with them deep into the woods. Since this is a 'light opera' we can be sure that she's only there to sing. Ahem
Johann Strauß II
Ischler Walzer. Nachgelassener Walzer Nr. 2
We return to Bad Ischl, and to Emperor Franz Josef's Summer Villa; and (oh joy!) are joined by two members of the Vienna State Ballet. The woman appears first on a balcony, dressed rather like Empress Sisi. Perhaps, then, when she reappears down in the meadow below with a strapping lad and dances a duet, we can wonder if this was Sisi's fantasy of the simple peasant life.
Johann Strauß II
Nachtigall-Polka, op. 222
A light piece for such an iconic bird. Schubert captured it better in one of his songs.
Eduard Strauß
Die Hochquelle. Polka mazur, op. 114
Eduard's tribute to the new water pipeline, bringing clean mountain water to Vienna's growing population. (You can read all about the growing population in Stoppard's Leopoldstadt and see it on BBC iPlayer in Vienna Blood)
Johann Strauß II
Neue Pizzicato-Polka. op. 449
A slight piece.
Josef Hellmesberger (Sohn)
Estudiantina-Polka aus dem Ballett "Die Perle von Iberien"
Students' polka.
Carl Michael Ziehrer
Wiener Bürger. Walzer, op. 419
More couples from the Ballet take us on a tour of Schloss Rosenburg in the Kamptal. (Yup, we've been there too! They do birds-of-prey shows)
Anton Bruckner
Quadrille, WAB 121 (Orchestr. W. Dörner)
Secular and light compared to his usual.
Hans Christian Lumbye
Glædeligt Nytaar! Galopp
Happy New Year in Danish
Josef Strauß
Delirien (Deliriums), Waltz, op. 212
The strings open with some 'tremens'. Thereafter, it's a rather gentle and harmonious delirium.
And there ends the programme. HOWEVER - where would we be without the Encores:
Polka Schnell by Edouard
An der schönen blauen Donau - possibly Johann II's greatest work?
Radetzky March - Johann I's sole, unmatchable contribution to tonight.

Date: 2024-01-02 06:00 pm (UTC)This afternoon we also caught up with Andre Rieu's New Year in Vienna. Let's just say that it wasn't as objectionable as it might have been; and it helped me appreciate the Vienna Philly more!
